Tromsø, often called the “Paris of the North”, is a vibrant city located 300 km above the Arctic Circle in Norway.
Known for its stunning natural phenomena, rich history and unique cultural heritage, Tromsø is a must-see destination for adventurers and culture lovers.
A city rich in history
Founded in the 13th century, Tromsø became a centre for Arctic exploration in the 1700s.
Its strategic location made it a starting point for many expeditions, earning it the nickname “Gateway to the Arctic”.
Famous explorers such as Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) and Umberto Nobile (1885-1978) used Tromsø as a base for their polar adventures. Amundsen, the first to reach the South Pole, and Nobile, known for his airship expeditions, left an indelible mark on the city’s history.
During World War II, Tromsø played a significant role as the last stronghold of the German battleship Tirpitz, which was sunk by Allied forces in 1944.
Natural wonders and climate
Tromsø’s subarctic climate creates a unique environment.
From May 21 to July 21, the city experiences the midnight sun, where the sun never sets.
In contrast, from November 21 to January 21, the polar night shrouds the city in continuous darkness, providing the perfect backdrop for witnessing the Northern Lights (Nordlys).
Cultural heritage
The Sami, indigenous to the region, have a rich tradition of reindeer herding, which remains a vital part of their livelihood.
The city also boasts architectural gems such as the Tromsø Cathedral (1861, Norway’s only remaining wooden cathedral and the world’s northernmost Protestant cathedral), and the iconic Arctic Cathedral (1965), known for its striking modern design that resembles both the ice of the North Pole and the shape of the Aurora Borealis.
