Climb up to Raudfjellet, almost flat to Sjusj\u00f8en, and relatively steep descents to the finish at the Birkebeineren ski stadium in Lillehammer. Overall the trail offers approx. 0,6 miles of gentle climbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The age limit for participation in the main race is 16 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/norwayescape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Birk-1024x534.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/norwayescape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Birk-1024x534.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/norwayescape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Birk-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/norwayescape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Birk-768x400.jpg 768w, https:\/\/norwayescape.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Birk.jpg 1243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Birkebeinerrennet cross-country ski race is in memory of the Birkebeiner Viking ski warriors who carried the little heir to the throne H\u00e5kon H\u00e5konsson in 1206. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants will have to carry with them from start to finish a bag weighing 3.5 kg to symbolize the weight of the little prince who had not yet turned 2 years old at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Viking prince H\u00e5kon H\u00e5konsson was born in \u00d8stfold in the spring of 1204. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His father, Haakon Sverress\u00f8n, died on New Year&#8217;s Day 1204, and the king&#8217;s son was immediately &#8220;sought after&#8221; by the Baglers, who wanted to get rid of the heir to the throne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, H\u00e5kon had to be carried to safety and some Birkebeiner fled with the child to take him to his friend King Inge in Nidaros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They arrived in Hamar on Christmas Eve 1205 and went to a small farm near Lillehammer, where they remained hidden during Christmas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing on, they did not dare take the usual route through Gudbrandsdalen, but went over the mountain to \u00d8sterdalen. On this trip they suffered a lot from bad weather, frost and snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master skiers, warriors and Vikings, the Birkebeiner succeeded in their feat and H\u00e5kon H\u00e5konsson became king and put an end to the civil wars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under him Norway experienced its heyday in the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul
